INTERNATIONALLY OPERATING PEAT SUPPLIER

History

As early as 1918, the foundations were laid for a company that has grown into an internationally operating peat supplier of renown. This company, Nederlandse Veenprodukten Maatschappij, NEVEMA for short, specializes in the import and export of peat products.

The company has its own production sites and peat fields in the Baltic States and Germany. In total more than 3000 hectares. The harvested material is packed, traded in bulk by ships or transported to the Netherlands for storage and transshipment.

In addition to domestic and foreign users, Nevema also supplies Peat Moss a step further down the chain:  processing of peat products into quality substrates, suitable for the professional trade to horticulture and nurseries.

Nevema  removed a link from the chain in 2003 by taking on this process itself: Free Peat BV was born.

A factory in Westerhaar-Vriezenveensewijk was acquired which already sourced raw materials from Nevema. It was given the name Free Peat, a 100% daughter of Nevema. Nevema had been a certified company for many years and trades and supplies under the internationally appreciated RHP conditions and continues this certification within Free Peat. The core of this certification is 'chain monitoring'.

Transport and control of the production are under strict surveillance. Virtually all actions, operations and corridors within the production and transport process, are registered and checked. Traceability is of key importance. An independent inspection bureau, ECAS, randomly visits the factory at least 6 times a year to check.

In 2022, investments were made in a completely new production line with state-of-the-art mixing and packaging lines. The future focus is to continue making products and packaging more sustainable and to further specialize in certain branches of horticulture, such as food production and plant propagation. Of course, while retaining the well-known Free Peat quality and service.
